Yaron Gottfried piano and conductor, Yorai Oron bass, Rony Holan drums, with the Uno ensemble of Beijing

Yaron Gottfried’s remake began as a commission from Beijing’s Forbidden City Concert Hall. For the 2011 recording, Gottfried leads from the piano, with Yorai Oron and Rony Holan forming the jazz trio alongside the wind, percussion, organ and strings of the Uno Ensemble.

Across twelve movements, the pulse changes with the picture. “Gnomus” takes a swing-rock groove, “Tuileries” becomes a light samba, “Limoges” moves through Latin rhythm into R&B, and the Great Gate of Kiev ends with a New Orleans blues turn. The recurring Promenades change character too, making Mussorgsky’s walk through the gallery part of Gottfried’s improvising design.
