United Artists originally billed this shifting ten-piece as Teddy Charles and the All Stars; the Teddy Charles Tentet name arrived with the digital reissue fifty years later.

Across two 1963 sessions, Charles recast eight Russian themes with players including Eric Dolphy, Zoot Sims, Pepper Adams, Jim Hall and Hank Jones.
