One Gregorian melody holds the whole of Sequenze Armoniche together. Conductor Nicola Pisani gave Victimae paschali laudes to five composers, each of whom built a substantial new piece from the notes of the Easter sequence.
The performances were recorded at editions of the Jazz e Altro festival in Apulia. Within the Dolmen Orchestra’s large brass-and-reeds sound, John Surman and Michel Godard take prominent improvising roles, while the voices of Linda Bsiri and Giovannangelo De Gennaro bring the music back towards its vocal origins.
