The Modern Jazz Quartet grew out of Dizzy Gillespie’s big-band rhythm section. Under pianist John Lewis’s musical direction, the group brought blues, bebop and classical form into the same repertoire, with Milt Jackson’s blues-rich vibraphone central to its sound. Lewis wrote fugues and extended concert works specifically for the ensemble, making classical form part of the quartet’s everyday musical language.
