Powell introduced the piece as a Solfeggietto he had played in childhood, then recorded it alone rather than with his usual trio. In two and a half minutes he races through C. P. E. Bach and breaks into his own hard-bop vamp, a jump between musical worlds that one contemporary reviewer predicted would become a classic example of Powell’s art.
