Jens Schöwing makes Bach’s Invention No. 4 in D minor the centre of a much larger design. Its urgent little theme returns in eight contrasting arrangements, moving through swing, bossa, ballad and quieter ambient textures.

Schöwing borrows Bach’s own contrapuntal tricks, including inversion and retrograde, while the chess titles bring a dry streak of humour to the exercise. Matthias Entrup’s vibraphone expands the established piano trio into a quartet and gives the interlocking lines another bright, percussive voice.
