- Alexey Kruglov alto saxophone, with Igor Goldenberg and Yulia Ikonnikova organ and Jaak Sooäär electric guitar and live electronics
The album title’s initials spell BACH. Saxophonist Alexey Kruglov brings Bach’s music into a group with organists Igor Goldenberg and Yulia Ikonnikova and guitarist Jaak Sooäär, allowing the combinations of instruments to change from piece to piece.
Some arrangements stay close to Bach’s written lines; elsewhere Kruglov takes them into free improvisation. His treatment of the Badinerie even uses sounds made with the saxophone’s mouthpiece, a long way from the flute that carries the melody in Bach’s orchestral suite. The final chorale prelude offers a quieter ending to a record willing to be both careful with its sources and unruly with them.
